Many of my peers have been searching for their true passion for years. Some have recently found it in their first year of college, while others might continue searching in the years to come. Luckily, this has not been the case for me. In fact, I have known what my passion is since I was 7 years old, and that passion is history.
Growing up in south-central Pennsylvania provided me with easy access to many historical sites, including Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Washington. Growing up in this climate, I naturally took a liking to history. However, it was a trip to Hawaii when I was 7 and a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial that truly solidified my passion for the past.
As I have grown older, my interest in politics has similarly heightened, leading me to plan on double-majoring in history and either political science or international politics. The great thing about being a liberal arts major, despite the seemingly endless remarks questioning how I’ll ever make any money, is that the skills I will gain are applicable to many career paths. At this point in my life, I do not know exactly what I would like to do with my degrees. Luckily, as a rising sophomore in the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, I have plenty of time to make up my mind.
Interning at Bravo Group provides a unique opportunity for me. I believe that gaining an understanding of client issues and the political process in Pennsylvania will aid me in whichever career path I choose. So far, I have interned at U.S. Rep. Scott Perry’s office, seeing the political process at the national level, and I interned just this past spring at the Penn State All-Sports Museum. While being a government relations intern at Bravo is undoubtedly different than both of these experiences, I see it as yet another opportunity to search for which avenue to direct my passion.
Indeed, growing up in the Harrisburg area is also conducive to political junkies. Having spent a lot of time in the Capitol when my mom worked for Govs. Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker, I look forward to re-exploring this part of my childhood, all while preparing for the next stage in my life.
