Get ready for the glitz and glamour — it’s Hollywood’s biggest night this Sunday! The Academy Awards, more commonly known as “The Oscars®”, is considered one of the best examples of good public relations. As the oldest media award ceremony, it has been broadcasted in more than 200 countries and is the second most watched annual television program, behind the Super Bowl (The Examiner).

From box office numbers to Oscar® nominations, public relations is a huge part of the film industry.
For the Oscars®, it starts with campaigning for a nomination followed by a win. For example, Warner Brothers and Disney both spent $10 million dollars on their campaigns for Argo and Lincoln respectively. They bought TV spots, print advertising, and hosted formal parties. And I’m sure it doesn’t hurt to have two US Presidents campaigning for you as well (MyNorthwest). Following the award ceremony (if they win) the two movies will plaster “Academy Award Winner Daniel Day-Lewis” or “Argo, Winner of 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture” on every piece of advertising to drive sales.
Red Carpet –
“Best Picture” is not the only coveted award at the Oscars. Who will be named “Best Dressed” this year? The red carpet is just as exciting as the actual ceremony with celebrities decked out from head to toe in thousands of dollars of custom gowns and diamonds.
Fashion, jewelry, hair and makeup designers will get all of the publicity they need with one simple question, “who are you wearing?”
Social Media –
As usual, social media will be the go-to source for interaction the night of the Oscars. The Academy is pulling out all of the stops with multiple social media channels to watch.
